5 Not-So-Common Symptoms of Lice

December 31, 2017

Let’s get something straight here; contrary to popular belief, lice aren’t an indicator that your child’s hair (or your hair) is dirty and unkempt.

Quite the reverse!

Lice are often attracted to cleaner hair. So there’s no need to worry about anyone judging your lustrous locks. There are many misconceptions when it comes to lice infestations, many of which stem from us not understanding the symptoms. Common lice symptoms are usually itchiness and a dry scalp. However, these are not the only two warning signs.

Here, we list 5 less common symptoms that should tell you if (hopefully not) you have lice in the future.

5 Symptoms of Lice

A Tickling Feeling – You ever feel like something might be walking on your hair? When you get lice, these little insects move around in your hair, scalp and even on the skin behind your ears and nape. That causes a tickling feeling.

Sores – Often, we end up scratching our scalp a bit too much, which ends up causing sores. Take care to not scratch your head too much when the itchiness starts. Instead of your nails, use the pads of your fingertips. It won’t be as satisfying, but it’ll get the job done.

Difficulty while sleeping – Of course, with all the bumps, scratches, itchiness and crawling feelings in your hair, you may have a lot of difficulty in sleeping. If these become the causes of your sleeplessness, there’s a good chance you have lice.

Red bumps on your head, neck, shoulders – Lice don’t just suck the blood out of your head like tiny vampires. First, they inject their saliva into your skin then suck that to bring that about. Of course, this causes your skin to react, thus the itching. That reaction though causes bumps to appear, much like when a mosquito bites you.

Incessant Dry Scalp – Learn to differentiate between dry scalp and nits. If that dryness doesn’t go away, there’s a good chance it may simply be nits, rather than dandruff or dry scalp.
