Getting a tingling feeling on the top of your head? It’s getting hard to resist the temptation of reaching your hand up and scratching your scalp until the feeling just goes away.

No, it’s not just in your head. It’s LITERALLY “in” your head. Head lice.

In United States, almost 6-12 million people suffer from this condition. Head lice do not carry any kind of diseases however; they do cause irritation in your scalp. They cannot fly, and instead crawl on your scalp.

Here is everything you need to know about these blood-sucking parasites:

What is a head louse?

The scientific term for head louse is Pediculosis. It is one of the most common parasitic infestations in the world and especially common among schoolchildren and household members.

They spread when one person comes in contact with another who has lice in his or her head.

What do they look like?

There are three forms of head lice. These include:

  • Nit
  • Nymph
  • Adult

Nits refer to lice eggs, which the female adults leave right at the base of your hair near the skin of your head. These eggs are oval shaped and very small.

You can easily confuse these eggs with dandruff. Normally, they are yellow in color; however, sometimes they can have the same color as your hair.

These eggs hatch after a period of nine days. The eggs, which are closer to hatching, are located near the skin of your head.

An immature louse, which has just hatched out of the egg, is known as a Nymph. In appearance, it is similar to an adult louse but the only difference is that it is comparatively smaller. It sucks blood in order to survive and matures into an adult after nine days.

An adult can camouflage with the color of your hair because of which it is very hard to detect it. A female is larger than the male and can lay up to six eggs in a single day. The adult can last for about thirty days but dies in just two days if it falls out of your head.
