Head Lice and the Myth of Prevention

December 14, 2017

Want to steer clear of head lice infestations? Don’t have kids, they said… As tempting as the idea must sound (sometimes), children are the apple to a parent’s eyes. Even an armada of head lice attacking one after the other won’t lessen a parent’s love for their child!

Does this mean parents are okay with the idea of lice crawling in their child’s head? Of course not! In fact, desperate parents sometimes do anything to get rid of their child’s head lice including taking some prevention steps that aren’t really recommended.

Following are some head lice prevention myths that should be left alone by parents:

Head Lice Can Be Prevented With Soap and Water

A common myth concerning head lice is that these critters attack children with dirty hair. So, it only makes sense to have a shower or bath daily, using soap to clean hair.

On the contrary, head lice infestations aren’t the result of poor hygiene. Still this myth is deeply rooted in our thinking! Many parents don’t realize head lice are actually resistant to soap and water. Additionally, head lice are more attracted to people with clean hair.

Prevention with Essential Oils

Essential oils have been used for the longest of times as a stress relaxer, mood enhancer and aid for getting better sleep. There are some parents who use essential oils for lice prevention purposes due to inherent repelling properties present.

For example, tea tree oil is one of the most popular choices when it comes to lice prevention and subsequent removal. Yet, this essential louse repellant can prove to be deadly if consumed accidentally!

Prevention with Head Shaving

Little girls love their hair the most after their Barbie. Yet parents think it’s alright to chop off or shave their child’s hair completely! This prevention method does more harm than good – ruining the child’s self confidence for starters.

Head shaving if done at home is also incredibly dangerous especially if the child receiving this treatment is young and fidgety.

Prevention with Lice Shampoos

Many parents still buy head lice prevention shampoo to douse their child’s head and try getting rid of lice. There are several reasons why OTC chemical based lice prevention shampoos and lotions don’t work anymore.

Lice have become resistant to chemicals found inside these shampoos, becoming super or mutant lice. Repeat treatments are required of this method as well as a thorough comb-out. Even one nit or live louse left behind can create another army of lice within days!
